Linear Motion with Quick Return

Challenge:

Design a quick return mechanism having linear motion during the forward portion of the cycle.

Solution:

Drive the quick return mechanism with elliptical unilobes, as shown. If linearity is required in both directions, elliptical bilobes could be used. Absolute linearity may be achieved using a pair of special function non-circular gears.
