Speed Matching on Assembly Line

Challenge:

Heat seal the top of a product moved by a conveyor; continuous contact must be maintained for a period of time without slippage between the product and the sealing head.

Solution:

Mount the sealing head on a crank mechanism driven by elliptical gears, as shown. The varying output velocity provided by the elliptical gears, combined with the action of the Scotch Yoke, allows the sealing head to follow the product without slippage.
